Have your say on Council’s draft 2019/20 budget

The City of Victor Harbor has released its draft 2019/20 Annual Business Plan and Budget for community feedback.

The proposed budget forecasts a capital works program worth $10.6 million, and a $27.8 million operating budget with a deficit of $62,600.

It provides for the continuation of current services along with a number of significant activities including continuation of the Mainstreet Precinct Upgrade, transition to LED street lighting across the Council area, Coral Street arts activation, detailed design of the Arts and Culture Precinct and development of a new car park at the Victor Harbor oval.

Mayor Jenkins said the Council has worked hard to minimise the impact the budget has on ratepayers.

“Our rates are made up of two components – a fixed charge and differential rate. The fixed charge is paid by all ratepayers irrespective of their property’s value. The differential rate is calculated by multiplying the property’s capital value, which is determined by the Valuer General, by a rate in the dollar specific to the property’s land use,” said Mayor Jenkins

“In 2019/20 the Council is proposing a fixed charge of $390, an increase of $40 from last year, while differential rates will be maintained at 2018/19 levels.”

“This means that if your property’s capital value remains unchanged, you will have a $40 increase from last year’s rates bill. If the capital value has changed, you will pay an extra $40 plus an additional amount based on the increase in capital value as determined by the Valuer General.”

Mayor Jenkins said that community feedback is a vital part of Council’s budget discussions and encouraged City of Victor Harbor ratepayers and residents to find out more about the draft budget and proposed projects.

“We want to hear from our community to learn more about their ideas, priorities and thoughts on the different projects that are planned for the next year.”

“I encourage you to talk to your elected members about what is important to you and share your feedback on the draft budget.”
