Fortnightly kerbside waste collection starts in July

A fortnightly kerbside waste collection schedule is set to be introduced in the City of Victor Harbor from 1 July 2019.

The new collection schedule will see general waste, recycling and green organics (where applicable) collected on a fortnightly basis. It aims to increase the rate of recycling and resource recovery and to reduce the amount of waste that ends up in landfill.

There will be a number of initiatives introduced to support the community transition to the new system including a 50% subsidy for composting equipment and new bins from 1 May 2019.

There will also be exceptional circumstance provisions for permanent households that have more than five members, children in nappies or produce waste as a result of a medical condition. Residents who meet the criteria can apply for an additional 140 litre general waste bin and collection service for no extra cost. Small businesses and holiday rental properties can purchase additional bins up to a limit of two per waste stream and pay an additional collections fees.

The new system also includes a six week period during December and January where general waste will be collected on a weekly basis.

“We want to make the transition to fortnightly kerbside waste collection is as smooth as possible, and easy for our community to manage,” said City of Victor Harbor Mayor Moira Jenkins.

“It is going to require all of us to be more vigilant about our recycling and sorting of waste, but the more we do it, the easier it will get.”

A community education and awareness program will commence soon with the support of the Fleurieu Regional Waste Authority (FRWA).  It will include composting workshops with ABC Gardening Australia’s Sophie Thomson, information sessions hosted by FRWA’s education officer, production of a new recycling and disposal guide for households and small business that will be sent to households with 2019/20 waste collection calendars.

A frequently asked questions fact sheet has been developed to help answer common questions about the transition to fortnightly kerbside waste collection.

Further questions about the implementation can be directed to (08) 8551 0500.
