UPDATE: Victor Harbor Horse Tram - Temporary Cancellation of Services

Update: 4 January 2019

The temporary repairs to the Causeway are expected to be completed over the next two days which means the Victor Harbor Horse Tram service will not be operating until Sunday (at the earliest).

The Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure (DPTI) have advised that the Causeway will be closed to all vehicles on Saturday in order to complete the temporary repairs. It will remain open to foot traffic so locals and visitors can still get to Granite Island.

All of the Horse Tram’s beautiful Clydesdales will make an appearance at the Causeway stables today as they are tended to by our Farrier. If you drop by the stables before 2pm, you will be able to watch the Farrier at work ensuring our horses remain in top shape.

We will keep you updated on the repairs and operation of tram services when we have more info.

Update: 2 January 2019

Late yesterday one of the pylons supporting the Causeway partially gave way. This has caused a dip in the tram line resulting in temporary cancellation of tram services as a precautionary measure.

The Causeway is under the care and control of the SA Government Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure (DPTI). DPTI were advised of the incident and have organised engineers to inspect the damage as soon as possible. We will know more about the extent of the damage following this inspection.

We are disappointed to cancel the horse tram service given it is our peak season and trams have generally been operating at capacity. However, the safety of our passengers, horses and staff is paramount, and we will not be operating until we are satisfied that it is safe.

The Causeway is vitally important to Victor Harbor and is the lifeline for Granite Island. The council will continue to strongly advocate for a much needed upgrade of the heritage listed structure.

We will provide updates as we can.
