Youth opportunities to be showcased through street party

Victor Harbor is set to host a street party that showcases youth opportunities in the region after being successful in securing a grant through the Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal (FRRR).

The street party will aim to bring southern Fleurieu communities together to celebrate their young people. The idea is driven by a concept of a street party run by young people for young people.

The theme of the street party is ‘Step Up’, empowering young people to be more involved in their local community by providing access to information about the opportunities available to them within the region.

The project will be driven by members of the Southern Fleurieu Youth Advisory Committee and Strathalbyn Community Youth, who will form an ‘event team’, with the support of the City of Victor Harbor’s Youth Development Officer.

As a part of the development and preparation for the festival, the event team will work closely with the City of Victor Harbor’s Arts and Culture Facilitator to run a youth focussed Artisan Market in Victor Harbor in December 2018.  From this experience, the event team will then create and deliver the Step Up Street Party which is set to be held in early March 2019.

City of Victor Harbor Mayor Graham Philp was thrilled to hear the council’s funding application had been successful.

“Quite often young people living in regional areas do not have easy access to information about the services and opportunities available to them,” said Mayor Philp.

“The street party provides an outlet for sharing this information, but also inspiring our youth and providing skill development in event management.”

Building on the street party, the project will also provide young people with the opportunity to take part in a series of social enterprise workshops, focussing on running market stalls.

“Not only will young people get to participate in the street party, but we hope to provide them with the skills to take part in other community events,” said Mayor Philp.

The outcome of the successful funding application was announced at a Southern Fleurieu Youth Advisory Committee meeting earlier this week, and members were quick to commence planning.

“There is already so much excitement around this event. The advisory committee members and I have worked hard on the grant idea and application with council’s support, and we are looking forward to seeing our vision come to light,” said Youth Development Officer Lucretia Sperring.

Young people in the region who are interested in being a part of the event team for this festival are encouraged to contact the Youth Development Officer, Lucretia Sperring via lsperring@victor.sa.gov.au or (08) 8551 0586.

The Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal ABC Heywire Youth Innovation grants is a national program that aims to help young people use their lived experiences to generate meaningful and impactful change in regional communities.

The City of Victor Harbor received $9,320 to deliver the ‘Step Up’ Street Party and workshop series.

Further updates will be provided through this website, as the project progresses.
