New float delivered to Victor Harbor Horse Tram

The delivery of a new float and vehicle to the Victor Harbor Horse Drawn Tram marks the completion of another recommendation from the committee driving the renewal of the iconic attraction.

Following the comprehensive review into the operation of the service, the Victor Harbor Horse Drawn Tram Committee made a number of recommendations which were unanimously supported by council members. These recommendations included the establishment of a new management authority and insourcing the floating of horses.

With the charter for the new management authority on its way to the Minister for Local Government for approval, the arrival of the new horse float and vehicle is another milestone the committee is thrilled to see delivered.

“I am proud that we are starting to see the results from the hundreds of volunteer hours that the Victor Harbor Horse Tram Committee has put in over the past 18 months,” said Victor Harbor Horse Tram Committee Chair, Councillor Carol Schofield.

“Our research and investigation indicates insourcing the floating of the Clydesdales will save the horse tram service close to $75,000 over the next two financial years.”

The bespoke Olympic float was built in Gepps Cross specifically for the tram’s team of Clydesdales. It is a similar float used by SAPOL for their horses.

Candice Loughhead, General Manager at Olympic Trailers said she was delighted that the iconic Victor Harbor Clydesdales will travel safely and comfortably in one of their custom built floats.

“Olympic Trailers is a proud South Australian company and we are thrilled to be linked to the iconic Victor Harbor Horse Drawn Tram,” said Ms Loughhead.

Victor Harbor Horse Tram staff will operate the float, towing it to and from the Causeway each day with the Mitsibishi ute purchased through McIlroy Auto Group in Victor Harbor.

The Victor Harbor Horse Tram Committee’s next focus is to work with City of Victor Harbor administration to prepare for the establishment of the management authority.
