Fleurieu Aquatic Centre makes a splash

On Sunday, 2 April the Fleurieu Peninsula region celebrated the opening of the new $21 million Fleurieu Aquatic Centre, providing a 25 metre lap swimming pool, rehabilitation pool and a dedicated kid’s splash area to the community.

Minister for Regional Development Fiona Nash said the new centre would encourage sports participation, fitness and fun in the growing South Coast community.

“I aim to build the kinds of communities our children and grandchildren want to either stay in or come back to, and an aquatic centre like this does just that,” Minister Nash said.

“Mums, dads, children and youth can enjoy a modern facility which makes the region a better place.”

Senator for South Australia Anne Ruston, who joined the community for the family fun day and opening today said the aquatic centre will be a major drawcard for the region, attracting tourism and regional sporting events to the Fleurieu Peninsula.

“The Coalition Government supports regional Australian communities as a matter of priority, particularly with projects like the aquatic centre which promote better community health and bring positive economic and social benefits,” Senator Ruston said.

South Australian Minister for Recreation and Sport Leon Bignell said the building features a number of environmentally sustainable features including the re-use of rainwater, national ventilation and on-site treatment of stormwater run-off.

“The building is cleverly designed and orientation will provide natural shade for visitors to relax and enjoy the free barbeques amongst landscaped and turfed surrounds. It’ll be terrific for family gatherings or a children’s birthday party.

I’m really pleased the people of the Fleurieu now have this fantastic facility on their doorstep.” Mr Bignell said.

Mayor of the City of Victor Harbor Graham Philp said the councils involved are extremely proud of this project.

“We have worked tirelessly together with key project stakeholders to deliver a top quality facility on time and under budget,” Mayor Philp said.

Mayor of Alexandrina Council Keith Parkes said after more than 30 years of sustained demand our communities now have the regional aquatic facility they have been calling for.

“On behalf of both councils, we acknowledge the strong support and passion our communities have shown this project,” Mayor Parkes said.

The project was jointly funded by the Coalition Government ($7.5 million), South Australian State Government ($500,000), City of Victor Harbor ($6.5 million), Alexandrina Council ($6.5 million), and the Alexandrina Art Committee ($24,000).
