Protecting Granite Island’s Little Penguins

Little Penguins are iconic to Granite Island and are a popular tourist attraction in Victor Harbor.

There’s no denying that the population has struggled in recent years. However there are hopeful signs with the latest count showing an increase to 44, from 28 in 2017.

We want to see our Little Penguin population continue to grow, and the City of Victor Harbor is working collaboratively with the SA Government’s Department of Environment and Water (who is responsible for Granite Island) and other stakeholders to support this.

Community awareness and education is the key to protecting Granite Island’s Little Penguins. It is important for people to be aware that Little Penguins are very sensitive. They don’t like loud noises and shining bright lights on them can be harmful.

We recommend those who want to see the Little Penguins in their natural habitat do this on the Nature Tours that Oceanic Victor run each night on Granite Island. The Tour Guides will share their expert knowledge and ensure you see the Little Penguins in a safe way that doesn’t impact them.
