2019 Citizen of the Year Award Winners Announced

The City of Victor Harbor is pleased to announce the winners of the 2019 Citizen of the Year Awards:

  • Citizen of the Year – Robert (Bob) Hall
  • Community Event of the Year – Victor Harbor parkrun

2019 Citizen of the Year, Bob Hall, has spent a lifetime committed to the betterment of Victor Harbor and the South Coast community. Bob has given up countless hours over the years in various volunteer roles including 13 years as a member of the South Coast District Hospital Board, 10 years with APEX, and over 30 years a member of the Rotary Club of Encounter Bay during which time he received the Club’s highest honour, a Paul Harris Fellowship (sapphire).

In his retirement, Bob became heavily involved as a volunteer with the Southern Communities Transport Scheme (SCOTS) which assists people who are transport disadvantaged. He took on many roles with SCOTS including Chairperson of the advisory committee and volunteer driver. In his 20 years as a SCOTS volunteer, Bob would have driven thousands of kilometres between Victor Harbor and Adelaide taking people to medical appointments.

Described as a team player and hands on contributor, Bob Hall is a worthy recipient of the title of the City of Victor Harbor’s 2019 Citizen of the Year.

Community Event of the Year, Victor Harbor parkrun, is held on Saturday mornings from 8am at the reserve at the corner of Franklin Parade and Harbourview Terrace. The five kilometre event is for people of all fitness standards and is an opportunity to enjoy Victor Harbor’s beautiful foreshore at the same time as being active. Since Victor Harbor parkrun commenced in 2014, more than 2,100 runners have taken part, including parents pushing prams, grandparents, children of all ages and people with varying athletic abilities, including a number of walkers. Parkrun has made a huge contribution to health and wellbeing of the Victor Harbor community through exercise and social interaction.

Victor Harbor parkrun is currently being coordinated by Shane Porteous, who will be accepting the award on behalf of all of the dedicated team of volunteers that make the popular event happen each week rain or shine.

City of Victor Harbor Mayor Moira Jenkins said the award recipients were deserving winners of the Citizen and Community Event of the Year titles.

“Both Bob Hall and Victor Harbor parkrun have made really important contributions to our community and are deserving winners of these awards,” said Mayor Jenkins.

“In their own way, the winners have shown an exceptional level of commitment and passion for making Victor Harbor a better place. Their extraordinary efforts and passion is certainly inspiring!”

The 2019 Citizen of the Year Awards will be formally presented at the City of Victor Harbor’s Australia Day Celebrations on 26 January 2019 at Warland Reserve. The festivities will commence from 8am with a free community breakfast followed by a formal ceremony from 9am.
