Ocean Street entry next up for upgrade

The City of Victor Harbor has reaffirmed its commitment to delivering its Mainstreet Precinct Upgrade.

At its meeting held on 26 June, the Council made some changes to the staging plan for delivery of the project which aim to minimise the disruption to traders, visitors and the community.

Stage 2 of the upgrade will now incorporate the northern end of the Precinct, continuing on Ocean Street from the end of Stage 1 to Torrens Street. Previously Stage 2 was to extend along Ocean Street from each side of the newly upgrade intersection to the end of the pedestrian crossing points.

City of Victor Harbor Mayor Graham Philp said the change to Stage 2 focuses on the transformation of the entry to Ocean Street.

“The northern end of Ocean Street is the primary gateway into the Mainstreet Precinct, and enhancements will make the area more appealing and further activate this part of the precinct,” said Mayor Philp.

Some amendments to the Stage 2 design specifications are needed to cater for the change and Council will also be required to apply for additional grant funding through the State Government’s Places for People program.

Council is aiming to commence the delivery of Stage 2 in May 2019. This will enable traders to be prepared for the works period, and give them a two year period without construction in the Precinct.

“The new staging plan for the Mainstreet Precinct Upgrade will see the delivery of a stage in the heart of the precinct followed by a stage on the outskirts. We believe this approach will minimise the impact on traders and be of greater benefit to the community,” said Mayor Philp.

“Recently Council staff hosted the SA Government Minister for Planning and Minister for Local Government on a tour of the Mainstreet Precinct, and both were impressed with the work Council had already undertaken and were supportive of the continuation of the project.”
