Children and Youth


The Encounter Kids' Space and Youth Area offer a range of activities to introduce children and youth to the world of literacy and learning.

Each space can offer a range of:

  • Audio books and Audio-Read for children with specific learning difficulties and/or print disabilities
  • Parenting resources
  • Picture books, board book and BIG books
  • Colour coded readers and children's novels
  • Magazines
  • Children's non fiction
  • Graphic novels
  • DVD's and CD's

Regular special events and holiday activities are held for babies, children, young people, and their families and friends.

Encounter, Rhyme and Storytime - Preschool Program

Encounter, Rhyme, and Storytime is a fun and interactive session designed for children from 0-6 years of age.

Encounter, Rhyme, and Storytime is a FREE program which includes a combination of singing, dancing, craft, activities, and story time.

Please remember to wear your 'craft clothes' as craft and/or sensory activities are often full of messy fun!!

The same weekly program content is run on Tuesday's at 9.45am and Wednesday's at 10.30am.

Each session is approximately 45 minutes in length and it is a wonderful opportunity to socialise for both children and parents alike.


 Baby Bounce


Baby Bounce

Baby Bounce is a program developed for parents and babies aged 0-30 months. It consists of 20-30mins of songs and rhymes with a sensory aspect. The sessions are interactive, fun and beneficial to both caregiver and child.

Singing and rhymes are a part of early literacy. Singing develops your child’s communication, voice development and helps with their emotional well-being. 

Sessions will be held Wednesday mornings from 10am - 10.25am just before Encounter, Rhyme and Storytime.


 Teen Unwind

Teen Unwind

Teen Unwind is an opportunity for senior school students to 'unwind' after school in our youth area.

Sloth on our lounges or bean bags with a FREE beverage from the on site cafe - Chat 'n'Cino, while discussing your current read with like minded attendees. This is followed by light hearted group games as selected by the group.

Suitable for ages 14 to 18 years as 'teen' concepts maybe discussed.


 South Australian Youth Week


Youth Week at the Library

April each year we celebrate South Australian Youth Week.

As the largest annual event on the South Australian youth calendar, SA Youth Week showcases young people's talents, contributions and achievements; promotes a positive image of young people; acknowledges the common interests of young people and their diverse backgrounds and circumstances; and enables young people to express their ideas.

Book Crew

Join the Book Crew and chill out after school with a FREE fruit box and biscuits!

While enjoying our afternoon snack, we chat about our current reads with other members of the 'crew'.

This is followed by light hearted group games and activities.

The Book Crew is an opportunity for primary school aged children to hang out in our Encounter Kids Space, with like minded attendees.

Suitable for ages 7 to 14 years - mid to upper primary age, and guardian supervision is required in the library during the session.

Lego Club; Where Books and Blocks Combine

Join us each Monday, during the school term, to build a 'blocktacular' creation with other kids who love Lego.

Each week is a different theme from flying machines to jungle creatures, the only boundary is your imagination!

Once built, your creation can be photographed and posted to our Facebook page for all to see.

Lego Club is an opportunity for school aged children to hang out and create with like minded attendees.

Thank you to the Friends of the Victor Harbor Library who assisted in the purchase of the Lego blocks.

Suitable for ages 5 to 18 years - but for attendees under 15 years guardian supervision is required in the library during the session.


 Little Bang Discovery Club


Little Bang Discovery Club

Young children are already great scientists without even knowing it.

This fun-filled 4-week hands-on program combines everyday objects and experiences with genuine scientific enquiry methods that children and their accompanying parents will thoroughly enjoy. Best of all, everyone will have a Little Bang Discovery Box to take home each week with a load of exciting items and activities to explore between sessions. The program concludes in week 4 with a graduation ceremony for the junior discoverers.

The Little Bang Discovery Club 4 week program is run during terms 2 & 3. The program is FREE but booking are essential via https://vhlibrary.eventbrite.com.au

Suitable for ages 3 to 6 years - guardian supervision and participation is required for the duration on the session.

School Holiday Programs

The Victor Harbor Public Library runs an array of school holiday activities.

The programs are listed on Eventbrite at least two weeks prior to commencement of each term holiday break.

You can visit us all year round; there are always 'Stay & Play' activities in both the Youth and Encounter Kids' Space.

Encounter Kids' Club

Featuring our mascots Matthew Flinders, Nicolas Baudin, & Trim the Cat

Encounter Kids Club is for children approximately 10 years and under.

To join have a parent or guardian fill in a membership form to the library, and you can choose to become a member of the Encounter Kid's Club.

The booty you receive will be:

  • a Kids' Club lanyard and sticker for your library card
  • colouring booklet, character stickers,  and a bookmark
  • emailed invitations to all our kids library events.

Children's University - Approved Learning Destination

Children cannot aspire to what they don’t know, the Children's University’s aim is to encourage children to try new experiences outside of school learning activities and recognises their achievements through the award of formal certificates. 

How to get involved 

Currently Children's University membership is based around a child's school and the school has to be registered with Children's University for the child to be able to participate. The Children's University program aims to provide extra-curricular learning opportunities for children aged between 7-14 years.

The Victor Harbor Public Library is an approved 'Learning Destinations'. Qualifying learning activities held at the Victor Harbor Public Library, will be promoted with the Children's University logo.

The Little Big Book Club

To promote the love of reading and importance of reading to children from infancy/birth and actively encourage parents in providing their children with a strong foundation for lifelong literacy, success in formal schooling and improved life chances.

Encounter Kids' Space and Youth Area

The Encounter Kids' Space and Youth Area offer a range of activities to introduce children and youth to the world of literacy and learning.

Visit the either space to borrow, read, play and/or create. Read on our lounges, reading nooks or relax in a bean bag.

The Encounter Kids' Space is themed by the history of Encounter Bay and the 'Encounter' of Matthew Flinders and Nicolas Baudin. The area features a giant wooden play boat, portals, and treasure chests full of stay 'n' play toys and dress ups.

The Youth Area is a relaxing space over looking the pond that surrounds the library.
