Fleurieu Aquatic Centre set to open with a splash!

Fleurieu Aquatic Centre - Family Fun Day - 2 April 2017

The wait is nearly over! The Fleurieu Aquatic Centre is set to open its doors to the public on 25 March.

After decades of investigations and planning, followed by a 21 month construction period, the City of Victor Harbor and Alexandrina Council are proud to be delivering on the community’s dream for an indoor aquatic facility.

To celebrate the highly anticipated completion of the Fleurieu Aquatic Centre, an official opening will be held on Sunday, 2 April 2017. The opening celebration will also incorporate a free Family Fun Day for people to come and see the impressive new centre, and perhaps jump in for a quick dip.

The councils have worked tirelessly for the duration of this project to deliver the aquatic centre on time and under budget. These efforts have not gone unnoticed with the project receiving national recognition for the unique collaboration which sets new standards for delivering major infrastructure across council areas.

Further information about memberships, programs and opening times is available online at www.fleurieuaquaticcentre.com.au

Victor Harbor locals invited to ‘Encounter It All’

Be a tourist in your own town

The City of Victor Harbor’s ‘Encounter It All’ event offers locals a chance to be a tourist in their town.

The event will be held on Friday, 7 April from 5pm until 7pm, and will see the Council open up its Visitor Information Centre, and offer access to the SA Whale Centre, Horse Tram and Granite Island Nature Tours for a gold coin donation that will go to charity.

The Visitor Information Centre will be a hive of activity with entertainment from singer, Georgia Darcy, the opportunity to sample the products from Encounter Coast Spirits and regional wineries, displays from local tourism businesses, and the draw of the three night Murray Princess Discovery Cruise competition. To enter the competition you need to collect coupons from two editions of The Times between 9 March and 2 April.

The SA Whale Centre will be open from 5pm until 7pm, Horse Tram running until 6pm and there will be 40 spots available on the Granite Island Nature Tour later in the evening. Bookings for the Nature Tours are essential and can be done via the Victor Harbor Visitor Information Centre by calling 1800 557 094.

The event will also launch Victor Harbor’s new place brand, and kick off a big weekend with the Encounter Celebration Festival taking place throughout the weekend.

Don’t miss out on this great opportunity to step into the shoes of a visitor and see Victor Harbor from a different perspective.

No wards for City of Victor Harbor

Elector Representation Review

Council made its final decision relating to its elector representation review at a special council meeting held late last month, and the City of Victor Harbor will continue to operate with no wards, a mayor elected by the community and nine councillors.

In the most recent public consultation for the elector representation review, Victor Harbor residents and ratepayers were asked to indicate their support, or otherwise, for the existing structure and composition to be retained. Over 700 responses were received throughout this consultation – a record for elector representation review consultations across the State according to the consultant who undertook the review on council’s behalf.

Council extends its thanks to all those who took the time to share their views. The responses were evenly split between both sides of the wards versus no wards debate, and the Council felt that again there was not a strong enough call for change from our community.

In the verbal submissions made at the special council, there was a strong call for more accountability and better communication with Councillors.

Elected Members welcome contact from community members. If you have any concerns or ideas for the council area please share your thoughts with your elected representatives.

Elected member contact details are available online or at the Civic Centre, 1 Bay Road, Victor Harbor.

Neighbour Day - 26 March 2017

Neighbour Day is Australia’s annual celebration of community that encourages people to connect with those who live nearby. Whether for a cuppa, picnic in the park or message of support; it’s the perfect opportunity to say thanks for being a great neighbour and for being there when I needed you most.

Your Neighbour Day action can be as big or small as you like. You could organise an event on your own or work with a group of neighbours, maybe even host an event for your street. You could also keep it simple and make a pledge to yourself to introduce yourself to a new neighbour or have a yarn with someone in your street you haven’t spoken to for a while.

Your efforts on Neighbour Day might make a significant difference to the life of your neighbour.  Find out more about the initiative at www.neighbourday.org

Neighbour Day is proudly supported by the City of Victor Harbor’s Caring Neighbourhood Program.
