High Speed Internet to provide NEW opportunities for Victor Harbor business!

Business in Victor Harbor will soon have access to the fastest internet in Australia as the National Broadband Network (NBN) is scheduled to be switched on in July 2015 with surrounding areas of the City progressively activated during mid/late 2015.

The rollout of Fibre-To-The-Premises connections will form part of the Stage 1 of the Australian Government’s NBN expansion.

As one of the first regional cities in Australia to receive the NBN,  doing business in Victor Harbor is going to be a huge competitive advantage.

“The NBN fibre network provides Victor Harbor businesses with a competitive advantage as far as accessing new markets, diversification of services, and creating business efficiencies through digital economy opportunities. Council  has understood this opportunity and recognises how important it is to support businesses by helping them identify how they can capitalise on the use of digital technology to grow,” said Mayor Graham Philp.

Where to from here

To support business in Victor Harbor capitalise on this new infrastructure the City of Victor Harbor has partnered with the Deloitte Digital and Deloitte Access Economics in preparing a Digital Economy Strategy.

The strategy provides context in terms of the opportunities that exist for business, while providing insight into current levels of business engagement in the online space.  The new network will increase current business capacity while there will be a need for education and training that builds business capabilities.

Council through its Economic Development & Tourism Committee will be undertaking a number of initiatives (informed by the Strategy) that will facilitate and enable local business to prosper in this new environment.

Key Focus Areas

The strategy identifies three key focus areas.

Recommendation 1:  Increase level of Digital sophistication in region

Recommendation 2:  Council needs to be an exemplar

Recommendation 3:   Awareness campaign linked to the rollout of the NBN

Case Studies

The strategy provides the reader with a number of case studies that relate to ‘Real Life’ examples of Victor Harbor businesses and entrepreneurs currently active in the online space.

Case Study 1 features Edible Blooms owner and entrepreneur Kelly Baker-Jamieson who has forged a business in edible florist gifts with a new venture in the making.

Case Study 2 features young local business owner Jake Doherty from New World Apparel who has used the internet to easily access products to meet the needs of his customers while using web-based services to reduce his operating costs.  Jake has plans to launch into the online sales space shortly.
