2018 Citizen of the Year Award Winners

The City of Victor Harbor is pleased to announce the winners of the 2018 Citizen of the Year Awards:

  • Citizen of the Year – Barry Fletcher
  • Young Citizen of the Year – Benjamin Pettman
  • Community Event of the Year – Victor Harbor RSL Sub Branch Anzac Dawn Service

Barry Fletcher, recipient of the Citizen of the Year Award, has been described as a selfless and compassionate individual who has tirelessly assisted many community organisations within Victor Harbor for over 40 years. Barry has been involved with the Victor Harbor and Port Elliot Lions for 22 years and there are not many activities undertaken by the Club that Barry doesn’t assist with. In addition to his role with Lions, Barry is a volunteer with the Victor Harbor Riding for the Disabled, participates in badge days for various organisations and assists Encounter Bay Probus Club amongst many other activities.

Young Citizen of the Year recipient, Ben Pettmann was commended for his involvement with the Victor Harbor CFS cadet programme which commenced in 2010. Ben was involved in the establishment of the programme, and in 2013 stepped in to the coordination role with responsibility for training, administration and the recruitment of new cadets. In addition to this role, Ben is currently a member of the Hindmarsh Valley CFS and holds the rank of Lieutenant.

The Victor Harbor RSL Sub Branch Anzac Day Dawn Service has earned the reputation as one of the most significant, beautifully located and well attended commemorative events in regional South Australia. Volunteers from the Victor Harbor RSL Sub Branch spend countless hours each year planning and delivering the Dawn Service to provide an opportunity for locals and visitors to pause, remember and reflect on this extremely important component of our heritage as well as acknowledging those who currently serve in the armed forces.

“Barry Fletcher, Ben Pettmann and the Victor Harbor RSL Sub-Branch have made an outstanding contribution to our community, and I congratulate them on their extraordinary efforts,” said Mayor Graham Philp.

Mayor Philp said the quality of nominations were again of a high standard.

“There were a number of worthy candidates for these awards which is reflective of the Victor Harbor community,” said Mayor Philp.

The 2018 Citizen of the Year Awards will be formally presented at the City of Victor Harbor’s Australia Day Celebrations on 26 January 2018.
